On major online sales platforms, one name appears with a strange regularity in the catalogs: sonstige. This German term, which simply means “various” or “others,” has been propelled to the status of a full-fledged brand in product databases. Behind this label lie unrelated references, opaque origins, and often nonexistent traceability.

Sonstige and product traceability: what the GPSR changes since December 2024

The European regulatory framework has caught up with the vague practices of online commerce. Since December 13, 2024, the European regulation on general product safety (GPSR, EU Regulation 2023/988) imposes precise identification requirements for each item sold in the Union.

Product type, model, batch or serial number, manufacturer’s contact details, and, where applicable, those of a responsible party established in the EU: all this information must accompany the product sheet. A generic category like “sonstige” is no longer sufficient to document the origin or safety of a reference.

Marketplaces are also affected. The GPSR assigns them specific responsibilities: verifying manufacturer data, reporting hazardous products, removing non-compliant offers. For an item labeled sonstige, the difficulty is immediate, as there is often neither an identified manufacturer, nor a batch, nor usable technical documentation.

The constraint therefore no longer only concerns the displayed name. It affects the entire supply chain: reconstructing the manufacturer, the components, the distribution circuit. To explore the references of the sonstige brand in detail, one must accept that most of these product sheets were never designed to meet this level of requirement.

Sonstige catalog on marketplaces: how a German word became a false brand

The mechanism is technical before it is commercial. When a seller imports a catalog from a German database, the “brand” field must be filled in. If the product has no known brand, the system defaults to “sonstige.” Automatic translation leaves the term as is, and French-speaking platforms index it as a full brand name.

This process affects Amazon, Cdiscount, AliExpress, and Vinted. The word appears in search filters, brand pages, and algorithmic suggestions. The buyer encounters a “sonstige brand” without knowing that it is simply a residual classification term.

Products with no common denominator

Under this label coexist automotive spare parts, childcare accessories, small appliances, and clothing. No coherence in the range, no unified quality control, no centralized after-sales service. Each reference comes from a different supplier, sometimes from a different country.

Comparing two “sonstige” products therefore makes no sense. A USB cable and a stroller can share the same brand sheet. This situation complicates any attempt at returns, claims, or warranty tracking, as the actual seller often remains hidden behind the generic label.

Checking a sonstige reference: control points before purchase

When faced with a product sheet stamped sonstige, a few reflexes can help limit risks. The goal is not to systematically boycott these items (some are perfectly functional), but to reconstruct the information that the label does not provide.

  • Look for the name of the third-party seller and their complete contact details. If no physical address or company name appears, the product likely does not comply with GPSR obligations
  • Check for the presence of a batch number, model, or manufacturer reference in the description or on the product photos. The complete absence of these elements indicates a lack of traceability
  • Consult reviews by cross-referencing the exact name of the product on multiple platforms. The same item sold under “sonstige” here may appear under its true brand elsewhere
  • Check for CE or UKCA compliance markings according to the product category. For toys, electrical devices, or items in contact with skin, these markings are mandatory

These checks take a few minutes but prevent blind purchases. The sonstige label is neither a guarantee nor a warning signal in itself, but it imposes a verification task that other brands have already performed upstream.

Digital product passport and the future of unidentified references

The Digital Product Passport (DPP), currently being deployed at the European level, aims to attach a digital identity to each product marketed in the Union. Composition, origin of materials, manufacturing conditions, recycling instructions: this data must be accessible throughout the object’s lifecycle.

For references classified under a generic label, this evolution poses a structural problem. A product without an identified manufacturer cannot receive a compliant digital passport. Sellers relying on the term sonstige to circumvent identification obligations will find themselves mechanically excluded from regulated sales channels.

The available data does not yet allow for measuring the extent of the phenomenon in the French market. Field reports diverge on this point: some product categories (auto parts, generic accessories) concentrate the majority of sonstige sheets, while other sectors seem less affected.

The regulatory pressure is moving in a clear direction. The GPSR since late 2024, the DPP in the coming years: each step reduces the available space for products without identity. Buyers who encounter this term in a catalog today should consider the sonstige label not as a brand, but as the very absence of a brand, with all that this implies in terms of recourse and safety.
